The Other in Mother is a visual art project which explores the psychological transition women experience in motherhood, described as a ‘continuous process of contradictions-tensions-resolutions-new contradictions’.

With support from Arts Council England, Manchester Art Gallery, Cheshire East Council and the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, Arc commissioned artist Sarah Greaves to produce a touring installation, building on Arc’s participatory arts work with vulnerable mothers.

Following a period of research and development with women with perinatal depression & health professionals, Sarah created an immersive installation of manipulated objects representing diverse experiences of maternal transition. The installation, housed in an enclosed geodesic dome, toured from September - December 2018 and was seen by over 2,800 people.

“I was amazed at how many people connected with the themes in the artwork, there was a real buzz and warmth in the gallery. People coming together to share experiences and feel less alone,” Katy McCall, Manchester Art Gallery

“This is such an important exhibition. It makes us think and talk about how difficult it is for mothers, how life changes and how we can struggle. We need more opportunities to talk about this and support each other, then we don't have to pretend to be perfect!” Exhibition visitor, Stockport

“Lovely and insightful. Makes you realise you are not on your own...that your thoughts and actions have been shared by many other mothers.” Exhibition visitor, Macclesfield
